Smoke-control information

Functional testing must be recorded against the information actually available for each site.

Smoke-control systems are building-specific. Product manuals are important, but they do not replace the fire strategy, cause-and-effect matrix, as-installed drawings and commissioning information for the building.

Every site is different

The intended activation sequence can vary by zone, floor, stair, shaft, inlet, fan, damper, vent, fire-alarm input and manual override. The correct basis for a visit may include the original design information, later revisions and manufacturer requirements.

What functional testing records

A maintenance visit can record the accessible equipment inspected, the initiation used, the observed sequence, readings, defects, isolations, remedial requirements and the condition in which the system was left.

Where original design information is unavailable

The report should not automatically state that the original design, fire strategy or cause-and-effect sequence has been independently verified. Smokevent Pro uses scope wording that distinguishes recorded functional operation from specialist design verification.

The original cause-and-effect information, fire strategy and/or commissioning documentation was not made available for this attendance. Functional operation was tested within the scope recorded in this report. This report does not independently verify the original smoke-control design, fire strategy, cause-and-effect sequence or suitability of the system for the building.

Site document library

Technical information retained against the correct customer and site.

Office users can upload and control site documents, retain superseded revisions and choose which approved information is available to an engineer for a particular ticket.

  • Cause-and-effect matrix and control sequence
  • Fire-strategy smoke-control information
  • As-installed drawings and zone plans
  • Commissioning certificates and original results
  • Manufacturer operation and maintenance manuals
  • Wiring diagrams and interface information
  • Alteration, isolation and modification records

Official reference points

Regulations, government guidance and standards should be considered alongside the site design basis.

The applicable requirements depend on the building, jurisdiction, system type, installation date, design basis and agreed scope. The following are reference points rather than a substitute for project-specific professional advice.

Important limitation

Smokevent Pro supports inspection, maintenance, evidence and audit records. It does not replace the building fire-risk assessment, competent-person judgement, original design documentation, manufacturer requirements or specialist smoke-control design verification. Regulatory content should be reviewed periodically and before use outside England and Wales.
